Maija Kurševa

b. 1981
Latvia
Maija Kurševa is an artist working across a wide range of media, often combining them within a single practice. Her recent work includes installations and spatial structures that incorporate moving image, graphics, drawing, and sculpture. Her practice is centered on reflections on how a work of art comes into being, structuring space around a single idea expressed through visually concise means.
Despite her multidisciplinary approach, drawing remains the foundation of her practice, serving as a daily tool for capturing ideas and developing them into form.
Kurševa holds BA (2006) and MA (2008) degrees in Audiovisual Media Arts from the Art Academy of Latvia. She currently teaches composition, risograph, and screen printing at the academy’s Movement.Image.Sound Department. In 2017, she founded the non-profit gallery Low and served as its programme director until 2019. She was also a co-founder of the artist collective Popper Publishing, where she worked as project manager from 2012 to 2018.
