Anita Paegle

b. 1956
Latvia
Paegle’s work is rooted in children’s book illustration, where precise detail, gentle humour, and lively character create a world of warmth and visual storytelling. Working with tiny brushes and layered colour, she creates richly detailed worlds of plants, animals, architecture, antique objects, and musical instruments, often set against the recognisable backdrop of Riga.
Over several decades, she has illustrated dozens of books and shaped close visual dialogues with major Latvian writers, making image and text feel inseparable. Her work has been shown in Latvia and internationally, including at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava, the Tallinn Illustration Triennial, the Biennial of European Illustration in Japan, and major book fairs in Bologna and Frankfurt.
Her achievements include the IBBY Honour List, the Jānis Baltvilks Prize, the Golden Apple-Tree Award, and nominations for the Hans Christian Andersen Award and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. For her contribution to children’s book art, she also received the Art Academy of Latvia Award.
